Safe Baby Haven or A Safe Place?

As many of you already know, Arizona Safe Baby Haven Foundation raises awareness and promotes education for the Safe Baby Haven Law. We have recently seen an increase in the amount of people asking, or stating, that QuikTrip gas stations are safe haven locations. We thought it would be a good time to help explain the differences between a Safe Baby Haven location and A Safe Place location.

A Safe Place is a national youth outreach and prevention program for young people in need of immediate help and safety. Safe Place designates businesses, and organizations within the community by readily preparing them as a place for help and safety. A Safe Place Locations may include any of the following:

  • Libraries
  • Fire Stations
  • YMCA’s
  • Public Buses
  • Various Businesses
  • Social Service Facilities

For those who live in Arizona, you may have noticed the Safe Place signs at QuikTrip gas stations. The QuickTrip Corporation has been a long time supporter of A Safe Place organization, and participates as a local business for youth the use as a place of refuge and safety.

The Arizona Safe Baby Haven Law was established in 2001, created to prevent newborn harm and abandonment by offering a safe alternative to those who may be in crisis. The law states that any parent, or agent of that parent, may relinquish their unharmed newborn infant within the first 72 hours after birth to any designated safe baby haven provider/location. No questions will be asked as long as the parent, or agent, expresses their desire to physically hand over the child under the safe baby haven law. These designated Safe Baby Haven Providers/Locations include the following:

  • Fire Station’s (On-Duty)
  • Emergency Medical Technician (On-Duty)
  • Hospital
  • Private Child Welfare Agency (Must have signs posted expressing their will to accept a safe haven baby)
  • Adoption Agency (Must have signs posted expressing their will to accept a safe haven baby)
  • Church (Must have signs posted expressing their will to accept a safe haven baby)

We hope that this clears up the differences in locations between a Safe Baby Haven and A Safe Place. We also hope it increases awareness for both causes throughout.
